Quake 2 shipped with deathmatch and not much else, and the community spent the next decade filling in the rest. Some of those mods outgrew the game. One of them arguably shaped the next twenty years of shooters. This is what mattered, what survived, and how to play it now.
A Quake 2 mod is a folder that sits next to baseq2 in your
game directory. Drop the mod's files in, then start the game with
+set game <foldername> on the command line, or load it
from the console. The classic engine and source ports like Q2PRO run mods
natively; that is where mod play still happens today. If you only have the
2023 remaster, the classic mods below are the main reason to also set up a
source port, which is covered in
Playing Quake 2 in 2026.
The big one. A realism conversion where a shot or two kills, weapons recoil, and rounds are short and tense. Its designers wanted action movie pacing rather than rocket arena chaos, and the result is regularly cited as an influence on Counter-Strike. The community never fully dispersed and lives at aq2world.com.
The competitive standard for team deathmatch and duel: match locking, ready systems, overtime rules, everything a league needs. When the archived leagues on this site ran their matches, mods in this lineage ran the servers. Servers carrying it appear in the standard server browsers.
Railgun only, one shot, no pickups. The purest aim duel the engine offers. The old server listings on this site had a dedicated insgib column for a reason, and rail-only servers still fill up.
No shooting at all. Jump servers run trick maps where the game is movement itself: strafe jumping, double jumps, circle jumps, ramps. This site ran a whole jump league, and the fifth tournament paid out real money. The discipline is still alive on modern servers.
A paintball shooter that started as a Quake 2 mod and grew into a free standalone game on the same engine, still maintained at digitalpaint.org. Fast, colorful, and one elimination per splat.
id's own capture the flag, and the mod that gave Quake 2 the grappling hook. It also introduced tech powerups, persistent items that changed how you fought. Every CTF server in the archive's old listings ran this or a descendant of it.
Round-based arena duels: everyone gets every weapon and full armor, last one standing wins, next challenger steps in. No item control, no timing, just fights. The ra2 column in the old server lists was this.
Humans against alien spawn, with classes on both sides and bases to build and destroy. Asymmetric team play years before that idea had a genre name. Its heyday was the early 2000s, and it still has revival nights.
The offline standby: computer opponents for deathmatch back when bots were a novelty. If you want stock Quake 2 deathmatch without other humans, the remaster now has bots built in, but Eraser is how the classic engine does it.
The archive on this site preserves mod coverage written while the scene was active, and the DemoSquad archive has match recordings from the leagues these mods hosted. For the expansion packs, which are separate from mods, see the expansions guide.
